Digital Identity: 2022-2023 Research

Established in 2020 as a Workgroup, the Digital Identity Observatory aims to understand the potential offered by digital identity systems and to contribute to the market’s development in Italy.

Through analyses and empirical research, aimed at defining digital identity features and development opportunities, the Observatory is focused on establishing a qualified and independent point of reference to foster cross-industry discussion between market players.

As part of the 2023 Research the Observatory aims to:

understand the landscape of digital identity solutions at national and international level
monitor the state of diffusion and development of the main identification systems in the Italian context
monitor the opportunities generated by the national recovery plan (Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza, PNRR) for digital identity market players
closely examine the main innovation trends and their application in onboarding and digital recognition solutions;
monitor the evolution of current legislation to understand the implications for market players;
scrutinize the synergies that digital identities provide in other sectors such as cybersecurity and digital payments;
analyze the technology infrastructure of the wallet model, the adoption of this paradigm by Governments, private businesses, and users, and the impact on the ecosystem;
understand the opportunities for exploiting APIs to create ecosystems and enrich the value proposition of digital identity
evaluate in detail the main approaches and application of decentralized identity models;
monitor the level of end user and service provider maturity regarding the adoption and use of various identification and recognition systems;
asses the user experience of main electronic recognition systems through objective and subjective metrics;
understand how attributes enhance digital identity profiles, ways of issuing and sharing, and the impact on the business model;

Events and workshops

The events planned for the 2023 edition of the Digital Identity Observatory are:

2 closed door workshops, designed to share preliminary results of the different streams of research and to promote communications and networking between the participants;
1 face to face comparison workshop, to promote debate and experience sharing through particularly interesting use cases;
2 in-depth workshops, with the goal of vertically examining some topics in greater detail, supported by experts;
the final Research results presentation Conference, with round tables and keynotes from the leading players of the national and international digital identity scenario.

Activities and Research content

The Observatory will produce the following content:

a fortnightly newsletter with the most relevant themes associated with digital identity;
a collection of static and dynamic graphs, designed to present quantitative results of the various lines;
a final report containing the main results of the Research edition;
in-depth reports on some vertical topics
