Digital payments in Italy have grown by 3.6% in 2014, despite the reduction in consumption. While old-type payments through credit cards have increased by 1.6%, the “new digital payment” methods (that include e-commerce, e-payment, distance and proximity mobile payment & commerce, mobile POS and contactless payment) have risen by 20% and are worth 12% of paper transactions. Two decisive factors are mobile commerce, which has doubled in value, and the increase in bills and tickets paid using smartphones. Smartphones are making Italians forget about cash. Payments and purchases made through mobile devices have increased by 55%, but more can be done. Remote mobile payment & commerce transactions via smartphone apps are spreading rapidly across Italy. This sector was worth around 2 billion Euros in 2014, and is expected to be between 4 and 5 billion Euros in 2017. Smartphones were used to buy three million public transport tickets, two million car sharing services and one million parking hours. While waiting for SIM-based and HCE systems to become more common and for Apple Pay to arrive, Italians are starting to make proximity payments using contactless cards and mobile POS, with transactions totalling 300 million Euros.
