Over 2016 we have observed many tangible signs of maturity of the Internet of Things (IoT) in Italy: the availability of new IoT dedicated “Low Power Wide Area” communication networks, expanded solution offerings, and significant market growth.
The IoT market in Italy reached 2.8 billion euros in 2016 (+40% from 2015), driven primarily by gas meters installed by utilities (Smart Metering), by connected cars (Smart Car), and by applications in buildings (Smart Building), the combination amounting to over 70% of total value.
Even if there are sectors that are not exactly “taking off” (Smart City, for one), the fields where great progress has been made in leveraging the IoT potential are many more: the most outstanding include home, industrial and retail solutions, and – though still at an early stage – agriculture.
