Digital innovation in Italian healthcare is progressing slowly and, following a relatively stable 2015, in 2016 registered a slight decrease of investments. Italian citizens, however, already make broad use of digital technologies in healthcare, particularly to monitor their state of health, as shown by the increasing use of lifestyle monitoring Apps. Doctors too, are already greatly ‘digital oriented’: they communicate and share documents and images with their patients through ‘unconventional’ channels such as email, text messages (SMS) and WhatsApp, and use Apps to update their competences”.
