The fourth industrial revolution is known as Smart Manufacturing. The Italian industry is rippling with digital innovations that increase company competitiveness and efficiency: Cloud Manufacturing, Internet of Things, Big Data Analytics, Additive Manufacturing, Wearable Devices and Advanced Automation. A survey of 135 applications in various fields highlighted the very tangible benefits felt by companies. But Italy needs a national programme for Smart Manufacturing. Limitations in size, culture, organisation and a reduced offer-side capacity are the main obstacles to smart manufacturing. IoT and Big Data are the most mature technologies to enter the process, Cloud computing the most versatile.
